First Lieutenant Henry "Hugh" Pennington, pilot of "Daylight One Four", departed Middleburg Island at 0745 to cover strikes on Namlea and Ambon on the Southern coast of Ceram. Fighter cover was provided. The rendezvous point was five miles East of Namlea at the entrance of Ambon Bay. The rescue plane departed the area at 1130 and proceeded on its other mission of searching in the vicinity of Manipa Island until 1440, when it started its return flight. At 1530 Lieutenant Pennington received a call that a pilot was down at 01 degree, 43' S, 131 degrees, 23' E. He proceeded to that area and rescued First Lieutenant Max Itzkowitx, 0-79563, 311th Fighter Squadron stationed at Noemfoor. The pilot was in excellent condition, although he had been in the water since 1200 when he was forced to ditch his P-47 in shallow water near an island occupied friendly natives. He was returned to his base at 1745.

DIARY ENTRY - "I was supposed to cover a strike on Namlea and Ambon at Ceram. Took off around 0750, picked up fighter cover just off Namlea. Had 4 P-38's for cover. Stayed at Namlea until 1200 and then went to Ambon. Stayed there until 1300, Got a call on the way home that a P-47 pilot was down on a small island. We searched for him, found him OK. Name 1st Lt. Max Itzkowitz of Brooklyn, NY. Strafed his plane to sink it." Hugh Pennington
