MISSION REPORT - EVACUEES - 07

[Back][Next]

17 OCTOBER 1944
First Lieutenant Jarvis T. Yagla, in "Daylight One Three" departed Middleburg Island at 0555 with fighter cover on a mission to the Southern coast of Waigeo Island for the purpose of evacuating Dutch and native personnel. The rescue ship arrived at its destination at 1100, landed in a rough sea and taxied to within 200 yards of the shore. Native canoes brought passengers out the ship. Considerable difficulty was encountered in getting the women and children aboard, due mainly to the roughness of the sea. All were finally aboard and the rescue ship lifted from the water at 1150, their transfer of passengers taking 35 minutes. The fighter escort was dismissed and the ship with its load of civilians proceeded to Sansapor where it discharged its cargo and returned to its base at Middleburg. Some of these people had been prisoners of the Japanese and were grateful to again resume their lives as free people.
