MISSION REPORT - RESCUES - 01

02 OCTOBER 1944
First Lieutenant Leroy R. "Roy" Nelson, pilot of "Daylight One Four", received an urgent call at 1100 to proceed to the rescue of a P-40 pilot, down on a mud flat on the Southwest shore of the Vogelkop (bird's head). Lieutenant Nelson arrived at the coordinates given and was directed to the survivor by two circling P-40's. Lieutenant Nelson landed off shore and the survivor paddled to the rescue plane, and was taken aboard at 1400, and returned to his base at Noemfoor. The rescued Australian P-40 pilot, was unhurt and stated that due to lack of fuel he was forced to land his ship on the mud band at 0930, 2 October 1944.

Time Line:
1130:  Take off. Flew direct from Auto (over land 8-9000) to 19 Option. Made visual contact with P-40 and pilot on rock bottom 300 yards from mainland of Vogelkop on mud flat and waited while pilot collected equipment and paddled to ship. 1400: Checked maps and proceeded to Eyelet. 1530:  Landed Eyelet.
